China’s Third Pesticide Registration for Controlling Fall Army worm Granted

Following the 30 billion spores/g beauveria bassiana WP (Registration Certificate No. PD20190002) of Shanxi Luhai Pesticide Science and Technology Co., Ltd., and 8 billion spores/ml metarhizium anisopliae CQMa421 (Registration Certificate No. PD20171744) of Chongqing Greenation Bioengineering Co., Ltd., Wuhan Kernel Bio-tech Co., Ltd. has recently developed 32000 IU/mg bacillus thuringiensis WP (Registration Certificate No. PD20084969) was approved for extended use for registration.

The extended crops and their control objects as approved are Fall armyworm, rice-stem borer, peach oriental fruit moth, tea tree Euproctis pseudoconspersa Strand. For the control of Fall armyworm, it is recommended to spray it one time from the hatching stage to the young larva stage, and the recommended dosage is 225 ~ 300 g/mu.

Previously registered crops and control objects of this product included cabbage plutella xylostella, pepper helicoverpa assulta, brassicaceous cabbage caterpillar, Cnaphalocrocis medinalis Guenee, Zizania latifolia Chilo suppressalis (Walker) and Maruca testulalis Geyer. This is also the third Fall armyworm control formulation approved and registered in China.

Bacillus thuringiensis is a microbial insecticide, which has gastric toxicity, no contact and inhalation effect. After feeding sensitive insects, the crystal proteins in the formulation are transformed into molecules with toxin activity under the action of alkaline midgut fluid and special protease, and bind with specific receptors on the midgut cell membrane, which eventually leads to the death of target insects due to feeding resistance, paralysis, intestinal perforation, starvation and septicemia (basically no toxic and side effects on humans and mammals). Similar to beauveria bassiana and metarhizium anisopliae, bacillus thuringiensis was selected into the recommended list of emergency control pesticides for Fall armyworm recommended by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs in 2019 and 2020
